To be clear, I am not referring to "build" as in compiling, assembling and linking to "build" binaries, but "build" as used in statements such as "I like to build stuff." I believe it may have originated from a 1993 book called "Code Complete". This book used a "construction" metaphor to describe programming. This is only a guess.
