There are certainly developers that are not doing any “engineering”, but as far as the software engineer title goes there are many cases where there is a distinction without a difference.
Are the people working on autonomous driving, vehicle safety, infrastructure management any less important than the guy who designed the plastic housing with the title mechanical engineer?
- pishpash 9y agoNot less important, but not held to the same standard, which is the point here.
- alphabettsy 9y agoThat’s changing rapidly. The VW engineer that was charged with implementing a software defeat, the current Tesla controversy is entirely based on software, as is the woman killed by an Uber vehicle. As software becomes ever more a matter of life and death I think we’ll see software engineer used maybe more specifically. Maybe some or many programmers and developers should stop calling themselves engineers?
