They've been around for years in many forms on many platforms. This isn't a new idea. The problem is solved by combinations like this:
Designers > GUI DevTools > Canned Solutions
Designers > Coder/Designers > Coders > Any Solution
Designer/Coders > Any Solution
Designer/Coders > GUI DevTools > Canned Solutions
etc...
You have to make a compromise somewhere, either with skilled people or tooling.
I had a friend work with a client using a Squarespace site, and his client asked "Can we put a red circle ad in the top right corner?"
His reply was "Maybe". If they were using a non-canned solution, the answer would be "yes".
- Arbalest 9y agoRecent example I've come across. Wordpress used for a non-blog site. Sure it looks fine, but I can't deploy that to something that doesn't have PHP, which is more often the case these days.
- wolco 9y agoWhat are you trying to deploy to that doesn't have php? Are you still running apache or nginx?
- Arbalest 9y agoNo, we were looking at firebase hosting > "We deliver all of your static content (html, js, images, etc.) over a secure SSL connection and serve it on a CDN. Firebase Hosting is for hosting static assets. Firebase currently doesn't offer any way to execute your code on Firebase's servers."
- prepend 9y agoIs there something like a wordpress front end for authoring and managing content that then generates all the static content for you to deploy? In the olden days, blogger.com used to have this feature so you could self host. They ditched this in I think 2009 so google could get deeper data on all those blogs users.
- Arbalest 9y agoI entirely expect so. With the advent of single page site frameworks, it is pretty trivial. This is exactly what firebase targets. The backend stores structured data, and the static assets delivered as frontend code then organise the presentation. Well, strictly firebase was originally intended for mobile apps, which already work that way. But with frontend heavy frameworks, this process is easier to replicate than ever.
- Arbalest 9y agoI just realised I may have misunderstood your question. Is this what you mean? https://jekyllrb.com/ https://jekyllrb.com/
