One time I got into a dispute with an insurance company over about $500. I sent them a letter outlining the legal basis for my grievance and said that I would be considering legal options in small claims court if I didn't get a satisfactory response. It was settled pretty quickly via phone call after that. My point is that you have to be willing to show that you will escalate and you are not bluffing. Companies don't wanna go to court any more than you do.
