For simple queries, I totally prefer ORM because the code that converts the results to objects is more work than learning/writing the ORM API. For complicated queries involving joins and/or complicated conditions, in my experience writing the raw SQLs directly is simpler and more readable than ORM. However most ORMs let you use raw queries and you still get the benefit of not having to write the conversion code.
