Python killed any chance of success for Mercurial.

  Agreed, but I’d have guessed that the Windows / git compatibility horrorshow (at least in the early days) would have nuked git’s chances as well. I’d have bet on the success of more friendly CLI UX and comparatively easier time on Windows even with the disamenity of Python.
