Unless there is some kind of political miracle and the governments of the developed world can devise a wealth tax that works, per Piketty, it won't stop until there is another major world war.
- cdmckay 9y agoIt’s not going to happen because the majority of the governments are run by the 1 percenters

- jerf 9y agoYes. I find the idea that we can solve this problem by giving more power/money to the .1% and they'll take that power/money and (step two of underpants gnome plan here) and then the .1% won't have so much power/money is kinda silly. In fact isn't it rather convenient that the solution that everyone proposes to money/power inequality is to give the .1% more money and power? Weird how that inequality just keeps going up, huh?
- AnimalMuppet 9y agoSo were the governments before World War I.
- EGreg 9y agoHow is a world war gonna help? The rich will have nanobots and AI that can counter any strategy by the plebes.
- greedo 9y agoWar is one of the "Great Levelers."

- philipkglass 9y agoNanobots are still science fiction. Unfortunately, thermonuclear weapons are not. Another World War solves wealth inequality in the same manner that cyanide pills solve chronic pain.
- vannevar 9y agoMaybe I should've emphasized per Piketty---if you're familiar with his premise, it's that the only thing that has disrupted the steady rise in wealth inequality is war. The extension of current trends made in the article is consistent with the historical analysis in Piketty's book. The only ways it will stop, in his view, are a) war, which we've tried (and which works, but with obvious drawbacks), and b) a global wealth tax, which we haven't tried.
