Maybe Zuck can prevent some future scandals with this new feature. Unfortunately we all know they aren't actually deleting the messages, just hiding it. You can probably still buy the data.
{
message: `They "trust me", dumb fucks`,
isDeleted: true
}
In the UI: "Your message was successfully deleted!"
- nafey 9y agoDoes your message data actually get sold to third parties?
- SOLAR_FIELDS 9y agoProbably not the message data itself, as you would still have to parse it to gain insights. But the insights mined from it, definitely.
- CryoLogic 9y agoThere was a class action lawsuit in 2014 in regards to Facebook selling private chat data. I am not sure what came of it. But it wouldn't surprise me in the least.
- gressquel 9y agoI don't really know, but as facebook usage declines they will become more and more desperate to make up for the loss of revenue. One of these days when most people have moved over to another platform there will news in the media "Facebook sold users private chatlogs".
- mkirklions 9y ago>isDeleted: true This is entirely why I dont delete anything now. I feel like there are some blackmail companies that are web crawling looking for deleted comments and posts. Or if they dont exist today, they will in a few decades.

- ucaetano 9y ago> Unfortunately we all know they aren't actually deleting the messages, just hiding it. Well, more like if user=zuckerberg, delete, else, hide. They wouldn't want those "deleted" messages from Zuckerberg to show up in discovery...
- atomical 9y agoAre they required to keep his messages somewhere for compliance?
- ucaetano 9y agoNot that I know of, I've seen similar situations in previous workplaces (emails from a CEO) and retention was only required under certain circumstances, such as when undergoing a lawsuit. And that was emails, vs. social media messages. So not sure how it would apply in this case (IANAL).
- anonymfus 9y agoThat reminds me the story about how Russian counterpart of the Zuck messed with one of his developers message history: https://medium.com/@anton.rozenberg/pavel-durov-sued-senior-tech-lead-for-1-7-b24961dec503 https://medium.com/@anton.rozenberg/pavel-durov-sued-senior-...
