Ask HN: Should patent law be so restrictive?

Is the current system of protecting patents useful? Makes sense why trademarks and copyrights are enforced, to prevent companies selling products fraudulently. But what's wrong with someone copying/improving upon your invention and selling it under a different name without restrictions? What's the pros and cons?
