Homebrew Cray-1A (2010)
- dang 9y agoSeveral previous discussions. Maybe Chris will show up again. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8447518 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8447518 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6291515 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6291515 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4561787 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4561787 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2621177 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2621177 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1645291 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1645291
- fentonc 9y agoDid someone summon me?
- krylon 9y agoI said it before, and I will say it again: If someone managed to build a scaled-down version of the Cray-1 chassis and put a regular PC in it, that would be the coolest case ever.
- Karliss 9y agoSomeone made a 1/3 scale https://www.bit-tech.net/reviews/modding/case-mod/cray-1-by-daryl-brach/1/ https://www.bit-tech.net/reviews/modding/case-mod/cray-1-by-... Due to the hole in middle it is difficult to fit a rectangle without result being quite large. Even with a mini-ITX board (17x17cm) the diameter needs to be at least 2-3 times bigger that's half a meter.
- krylon 9y agoI know. :-( Would be really cool, though!
- JohnJamesRambo 9y agoI wish computers still looked like this.
- matte_black 9y agoThe coolest retro machine I’ve seen are connection machines. They’re just solid black cubes, when powered on they burn hundreds of ominous red dots across their surface, pulsing to show you the status of your program as it runs in real time. It’s like something Apple would make if they became a very evil cyberpunk company.
- RossBencina 9y agoThat led me to an interesting story about how Andras Tantos recovered a working OS image from the raw high-res magnetic disc image: http://www.modularcircuits.com/blog/articles/the-cray-files/a-new-hope/ http://www.modularcircuits.com/blog/articles/the-cray-files/...
