I only had to deal with RHEL6.x that had gcc 4.8 installed via packaging, I think Red Hat had a solution for this.

- aldanor 9y agoDitto, just wanted to say the same thing. On RH / CentOS, devtoolset exists exactly for the reason OP is worried about.
