Humans make the decisions, and humans make mistakes.. Humans don't always "get" all the context for every issue. Do you really expect perfection for every judgment? There are anecdotes for every scenario, and they don't accurately portray the general case or the intent.
- xg15 9y agoOk, so then what? We should tolerate a certain number of bullying groups and casualties for the greater good?
- gfosco 9y agoWhat's the alternative? Can you go on Twitter and find bullying? Can you go on Reddit and find bullying? Is there any internet property where moderation is 100% perfect?
- wukerplank 9y agoExamples that are equally bad should not set the bar, right? Nothing gets better by doing that.
- gfosco 9y agoIs there a better example? Is the concept of perfect moderation even theoretically possible?
- Const-me 9y ago> Is there a better example? No one is perfect, but I think Reddit is better. At least they are transparent, i.e. unlike Facebook, Snapchat or Twitter they aren’t afraid to talk to journalists about their content filtering: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2018/03/19/reddit-and-the-struggle-to-detoxify-the-internet https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2018/03/19/reddit-and-the...
- dahdum 9y agoWe should fight against, but within the framework of free speech. It's just as easy to suppress malevolent ideas with censorship as progressive ones. Handing that power to an elite few, however noble their intentions at first, is dangerous. In this case though, it does appear they made a mistake.
- aylmao 9y agoWe should fight bullying as a society, not attempt to hide it.
- Tomte 9y agoThese aren‘t isolated incidents. I have yet to report a post they find to cross the line. And I only report extreme cases, maybe two or three posts per year.
- gfosco 9y agoYou are still an anecdote. You know this, and you also know that people get posts taken down every day, by the thousands of people working to moderate content.
- Tomte 9y agoWe are legion. You‘re the first person I‘ve met who claims that FB‘s moderation works well, modulo the inevitable mistakes that people make. Germany even passed a (admittedly very bad) law, mostly because of FB’s unwillingness to take this problem seriously.
- gfosco 9y agoI said it wasn't perfect, and that it can't be perfect. I shouldn't be surprised that avoiding hot takes and trying to be reasonable is rewarded with downvotes on HN.
- marvin 9y agoUnless there's a woman's exposed nipple. Those get taken down on time, every time.
- Const-me 9y agoAt that time, too many Facebook’s mistakes were strongly in favor of Russian government. https://www.theverge.com/2014/12/22/7433277/facebook-blocks-alexei-navalny-protest-page-russia-putin https://www.theverge.com/2014/12/22/7433277/facebook-blocks-... https://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/jun/17/facebook-pro-kremlin-attacks-russia https://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/jun/17/facebook-pro-k...
