For my driving lessons, the instructor was actively telling me which way to go (e.g. "I want you to take the next left"). That conveys a certain level of road awareness even if they aren't actually driving. They are also probably expecting a student to make mistakes, which puts them in a different mental state than with a car that is right almost all of the time.
