The GPA thing always bothers me to hear it admittedly because I wasn't a great student in college. I typically always had my own thing going on that I cared about more. I can see where he's coming from though and I consider high GPA to a good sign when I'm looking at a resume. Often when I look at resumes I'm just looking for anything good.
My career outside of school is considerably better than that my work in school would have ever suggested. Before I started my company I was always the programmer who everyone hated to see leave and who was offered a lot of money to stay. I was glad to hear people talking about my younger brother who is also a programmer the same way. I figure that's the final measure of how good you are.
I never really cared much about what I worked on though. I always just wanted to be kept busy. Part of why I wanted to start my own company was to stay busy.
