A Short History of Women at Los Alamos National Laboratory
- ryanx435 9y agoMeta comment: I have never seen a front page HN post go this long (4 hours) without a single comment before. Interesting. I wonder what the record is for longest time on the front page with no comments? Does anyone know? And yes, I know I just broke the streak :/
- itronitron 9y agonice article, although I think the title is a bit dismissive... An Incomplete History of Women at LANL would have been better
- killjoywashere 9y agoLANL has the best science museum I have ever been to.
- ianai 9y agoIt takes a special kind of “intellect” to pigeonhole women into the computer role, with math degrees. That must have been one of the most difficult jobs and generally not in line with the sexist mindset. It really was a different time.
- aaron695 9y agoWomen are better "calculators" Women are better at the humanities. It's never been clear to me why this is a insult. Mathematicians are however awful calculators, I'd guess below average compared to a person with a normal science degree. So it's not clear to me how they could have hired mathematicians as calculators. Something is off in this. Either Math degrees have changed since then or something is false.
- Proven 9y agoYou gotta be kidding me... why should I care? First, I want to see national labs terminated and research left to private sector Second, as long as these taxpayer funded labs exist, they should hire whoever does the job better and isn’t a spy.
