exactly this.
I believe Americans are not doing enough of their own research into things, blindly believing that their best interests are in mind by business (and multi-nationals) and by the government.
Many Americans I've spoken with expect diabetes drugs will miraculously cure them of diabetes, when in fact drugs, and most modern medicine, is to manage the pain / outcomes of the resulting condition rather than do a root cause analysis and solve that (holistically) problem and why it's occurring in the first place.
I believe there's little understanding of how out of hand free-market capitalism can get and how toxic its effects can be on the general public. Despite the American views of how the market should be it seems there's expectation by the people that they're somehow protected.
Look at all the research coming out, all of the reality tv show medical advise. Much is flat out wrong. Much is radically incomplete and meaningless results are published simply to get ones name in a science journal. This creates the problem for those who do takes the proper approach to doing their own investigation rather than absentmindedly consuming media and believing it to having to vet the content they're consuming for validity. So yes, the contents of the minds is manipulated and woefully wrong.
