Oh, come on, I think all these comments about Uber PR are way, way too harsh. Sure, the camera sensor might be making video appear darker than it actually was, and I'm surprised LIDAR didn't help, and sure something might and should be improved. But given the amount of accidents happening in a clear daylight in pretty damn obvious situations without any automatics whatsoever, purely because of humans — it's unfair to make a case of robot-auto unreliability out of it. I don't know what would be the chance of human driver hitting this girl, but I'm guessing high. If anything, the pedestrian sure as hell should've seen the car! Apparently though, she didn't. Why? Well, because.
The though of myself driving this car manually in this situation actually makes me feel scared. I might would have been going slower… I might. Fuck, I'm actually panicking trying to imagine that.
- oldgradstudent 9y agoAs bad as they are, human drivers in the US have 1.25 fatalities every 100 million miles, across all road conditions and pedestrian behavior. Uber just crossed the 2 million miles and it already has a fatality, where a competent driver could have, at the minimum, slow down by a few miles per hour to reduce the severity of the crash enough to result in an injury instead of death. There's no excuse here. The Uber self driving car should not be anywhere near a public road, where children, the elderly, or distract people can be found.
