Seems like a really stupid thing to DIY to save money, and a great way to burn your house down.

  You can unplug from the electrical grid with one of these. If you don't have 5 grand to plunk down on a giant battery I'd say it's a pretty effective way to save money. You don't have to keep it in your house. If you have a small section of land which would otherwise normally house a shed, you can build a fireproof enclosure outside to house the pack. If it burns down, your house doesn't. And if you're building it from scratch, you can include enough sensors for it to auto-shut down when an unsafe voltage or temperature is detected. (the linked video mentions all this) When people build their own car, they're also taking their life in their hands. But if you learn the right way to do it, you won't blow yourself up.
