I just don't trust Uber and its engineers enough to trust them as a self-driving car company. Even before this incident.
Their organisation has been shown to be deceitful, their CEO to be devious. I can completely believe they would cut corners or claim safety where they know there is risk. To get to market ahead of the competition knowing that the fate of road users lay in a dice roll.
Technically they had to resort to stealing Waymo's IP to get ahead, and their self-driving cars have previously been shown to behave recklessly.
I do, tentatively, trust Waymo. I've seen enough about the resources they've put into this, the extensive testing they've done, and their safety record so far to at least give them a shot.
