This may not have been an unexpected circumstance. The "pedestrian outside of the crosswalk" report is likely wrong. There is visual evidence that strongly supports that this was a case of the Uber hitting a bicyclist while merging into the right turn lane.
Here's a picture of the crumpled bicycle (note dent on the front right of the car): https://twitter.com/daiwaka/status/975767445859287042 https://twitter.com/daiwaka/status/975767445859287042
The sign it is lying next to lets us locate the exact point of the collision on Google street view: https://www.google.com/maps/@33.4370667,-111.9430321,3a,75y,132.91h,64.25t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1ss_YmQlzA3ace0P2LVk4wwA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656 https://www.google.com/maps/@33.4370667,-111.9430321,3a,75y,...
It's right where the vehicle lane crosses the bike lane approaching the intersection. Very unlikely a pedestrian was walking a bike there. Much more likely the Uber hit the bicycle while merging.
EDIT: I take back "very unlikely" a pedestrian was crossing there. There is in fact a very weird "X" pathway in the median that pedestrians are not supposed to be in. I didn't see that until I looked at the satellite view.[1] So possibly she emerged from there and was walking her bike across the street. That still looks pretty bad for Uber though, since that street is a straight shot with clear visibility and the dent's on the right side of the car. Meaning it would have swerved left to avoid a late-detected obstacle rather than swerve right away from her entering the roadway. She also would have literally had to walk straight into oncoming traffic. I still think bicyclist is the most likely scenario and it's odd the PD doesn't mention the crumpled bicycle.

- jessaustin 9y agoLots of confusion! It seemed the video was for an injury collision rather than a fatality? This is what we get from posting a Cincinnati source for an event that occurred in Tempe.
- omarforgotpwd 9y agoWow, that's really bad! Easy to see how the code didn't factor in the possibility of someone using the bike lane, which is a very bad look for Uber.
- Mononokay 9y agoThis is looking worse and worse for Uber.
- hourislate 9y agoI can't imagine how bad it looks for Non Autonomous cars considering the 100's of pedestrians that are killed everyday in the USA.
- Jackim 9y ago100s a day is a little off, the figure is around 11 per day. Not saying that's great, though.
- Anechoic 9y agoconsidering the 100's of pedestrians that are killed everyday in the USA According to the CDC, 5,376 pedestrians were killed in car accidents in 2015. According to the WashPo, 28,642 pedestrians were killed in car accidents from 2010-2015. That gives a rate of 13-15 pedestrians killed per day in the USA. Too much, yes, but not hundreds of pedestrians killed everyday. https://www.cdc.gov/motorvehiclesafety/pedestrian_safety/index.html https://www.cdc.gov/motorvehiclesafety/pedestrian_safety/ind... https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/trafficandcommuting/pedestrian-deaths-soar-in-the-uneven-battles-with-cars/2017/03/29/9984cc56-141c-11e7-ada0-1489b735b3a3_story.html https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/trafficandcommuting/ped...
- danso 9y ago"100's of pedestrians"? 2017 was a record high for pedestrian fatalities, at ~6,000: https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2018/02/28/589453431/pedestrian-fatalities-remain-at-25-year-high-for-second-year-in-a-row https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2018/02/28/589453431... The urban fatality rate of all fatalities is 1 per 100 million miles traveled: https://crashstats.nhtsa.dot.gov/Api/Public/ViewPublication/810625 https://crashstats.nhtsa.dot.gov/Api/Public/ViewPublication/... As of September 2017, all of Uber's autonomous cars have driven a total of 1 million miles over a period of 2.5 years: https://www.axios.com/ubers-autonomous-cars-have-driven-1-million-miles-1513305489-f9a7e397-09c5-40f9-b3f0-ca05da06cda7.html https://www.axios.com/ubers-autonomous-cars-have-driven-1-mi... There's an argument to be made that autonomous vehicles are better for society and safety. But it sure isn't statistical.

- radley 9y agoHe posted a tweet later, it wasn't a cyclist: https://twitter.com/daiwaka/status/975771533745336320 https://twitter.com/daiwaka/status/975771533745336320
- scoggs 9y agoWait, so that picture / video of the bicycle on the ground at what looked like the scene had nothing to do with the accident at all? It seemed really focused on from my POV. I'd find it rather strange if the bicycle had nothing to do with it although this is just reporting, it's not like it's the official police report or anything.
