This is a cultural issue. I'm new to New York and was immediately surprised by how little drivers care where they leave their cars. Traffic here moves very slowly and a lot of it seems due to lanes being blocked by unattended vehicles. I wonder if this is an American attitude, like the way Americans seem to care much less about recycling trash.
- Bellspringsteen 9y agoDefinitely. Where are you from? If you go to Tokyo you will be astonished by the unlocked bicycles, clean streets, parking, etc. Its possible. You just have to design the city so that those actions are the default. And educate people. And educate some more. And yell.
- huebnerob 9y agoJapanese culture has an extreme respect for laws, you can't just 'teach' someone that.
- lazerpants 9y agoIt's not an American thing, it's mostly just an NYC, and maybe Boston, Philly, DC thing. The parking/driving thing, not the recycling one.
- electricslpnsld 9y agoHappens on the west coast too, particularly in the Bay Area cities.
- djrogers 9y agoMaybe happens to a small degree in San Franscisco proper, but in all my visits to the city I’ve never seen anyone parked in the bus lanes on Market for example. As for the rest of the Bay Area, I skinny you’d find anything close to a tithe of NYCs illegally parked and stopped vehicles. In my town you’d find as close to zero as makes no difference, as would be the case in most others I spend time in.
- maksimum 9y agoI took a video of traffic flow on a NYC avenue: https://youtu.be/RXIyzdLl3vk https://youtu.be/RXIyzdLl3vk I wanted to see whether the lights were being used effectively to let the motor-vehicle traffic flow without stopping, and what potential causes for slowdowns are. On the one hand yes, a double parked truck which restricts the avenue to two lanes, does cause a build up: more flow is coming in than going out. But then there are some less obvious things: cars changing lanes, cars taking a right turn having to wait for pedestrians, and delinquent pedestrians.
