This approach is a pretty major step for creating believable VR experiences. You're still limited to a pretty small space (great for seated users), but the effect is very convincing and entirely unlike traditional photo-captured experiences previously available for VR. You can move your head around (but only within the sphere) and everything tracks the way you'd expect: parallax works, light rays through windows move, reflections change as your perspective changes, and people's eyes can track you as you move.
- gautamb0 9y agoSeconded, they look absolutely gorgeous. Photogrammetry scenes are comparable but are still a touch behind these in realism.
- rachelmetz 9y agoThey really do! I was impressed. (I'm the reporter who wrote that article.)
- gautamb0 9y agoI've been following your AR/VR coverage for a couple of years now and have enjoyed it and have been enlightened by it since.
