Couldn't you just disable the Windows Update service?

  Seems to work fine for me and then you can update manually with a tool like http://www.windowsupdatesdownloader.com/ http://www.windowsupdatesdownloader.com/ or maybe http://www.wsusoffline.net/ http://www.wsusoffline.net/
