Also the saturation is cranked up to 11, and maybe some kind of diffuse-glow effect. I don't think you're being inappropriate. The processing totally ruins what would otherwise be strong contrast between red-orange sandstone and greywhacke which is normally grey (plus whatever is growing on it) instead of the orange-ish colour it has in those particular photos. In other photos the unconformity is much easier to see.
