Soldiers (and the leaders who truly care about them) also have a vested interest in opposing torture lest it be normalized for use upon them. There is a reason so many countries joined on as signatories to the Geneva convention and it's rooted in both common decency and direct self-interest.
I don't think it's any surprise that many of the political proponents and enablers of torture as a policy did not serve or dodged their obligations when they had the chance to be the combat machines they claim they'd be, if only given a chance...
