Isolation is a punishment though isn't it?

  I keep hearing that it is because 'humans are social animals' and all that but is it really for people with antisocial behaviour?

  Isolation from society, yes. But that's to protect society, its purpose is not punishment. Basically, I like the Norwegian approach.
