- paultopia 9y agoFirefox has started sucking battery like crazy for me in the last few days, though. Can't figure out what it is.
- taneq 9y agoI thought it was the 'everything is super fast now' update (whichever one it was, 57 I think?) but maybe it's more recent than that. I was noticing last week that I can actually hear the CPU/GPU fans spinning up on some websites, which it never used to do.
- rukuu_001 9y agoAre you on a Mac? Had same, but fixed it with some prefs changes. Before that FF was stuck at 8-10% CPU.
- paultopia 9y agoYES YES what prefs changes were these? Please share!
- blt 9y agoIt is also happening to me. Big CPU usage spikes for no apparent reason. Sucks because I'm trying to reduce dependence on Google.
- rukuu_001 9y agoDon't have exact URL, but google 'windowserver high CPU'. Fixing windowserver fixed FF too.
- paultopia 9y agoInteresting. Some kind of animation/repainting thing? This bug[1] seems to be along those lines. [1] https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1404042 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1404042
- enraged_camel 9y agoI haven't understood why people use the Slack app, as opposed to just running it in a browser tab. It uses up significantly less RAM, and has basically the same features.
- grzm 9y agoTastes of course vary, but I find switching to a different app is easier than finding one of a number of windows or tabs within a browser.
- TomMarius 9y agoOpen Slack in Chrome, click browser main menu (the rightmost icon), hover on "More tools", click "Add to desktop". You get exactly the same benefits as you get with standalone Slack client but it still runs inside the browser.
- bradstewart 9y agoHow did I not know this was a thing. Thank you.
- z3t4 9y agoTry a window manager, for example i3
- bigger_cheese 9y agoPeople used to joke that Emacs stood for "Eight Megabytes and Constantly Swapping". I remember when my Dad paid a small fortune for a 386 with a 27mb hard disk which was considered insanely huge amount of disk space at the time.
