Design Patterns are used very often; you probably just don't notice them. Most of the patterns described by Fowler [1] can be found in large web application frameworks. For example, Ruby on Rails uses Active Record, Page Controller, Template View patterns. If you look at an ORM, for example Hibernate or Doctrine, they use even more patterns described by Fowler. But of course they are mostly used in frameworks. If you are writing a CRUD app, just take a web framework and make everything as simple as possible.
