Ask HN: How to set up an old laptop for young kids?
I have an old laptop: a Thinkpad from 2008 with Windows Vista as the OS. I would like to set it up for my kids to use and explore. They are 5 and 7. The goal is to minimize frustrations for them, to let them do the most things on their own, and to make it easy for me to fix it if they mess up something on a software level. Suggestions?
- brudgers 9y agoUbuntu. Because it's an old laptop and that it's not Windows makes no more difference on a laptop than it does on an iPhone. Because really messing something up would require sudo'ing and if your children do that it is a good thing. Because Ubuntu is supported and Vista isn't. Because the likelihood of malware is lower (not that it is terribly high on a well maintained Windows system these days). Because the difference between Excel and OfficeLibre doesn't matter at that age. Good luck.
