Because every ancestor of mine has made the decision to do it, and it is astoundingly presumptuous of me to think that if I have the opportunity to raise kids well that I shouldn’t follow their lead. Another way to put it: if my offspring keep the strain alive, maybe my genetic code will live to see the end of history. I now have two kids, and the thing that will overwhelm me with emotion is the fact that I brought into the world beings that will both suffer and die. But I never blame my parents for doing the same.
