Zombie Jesus and pillars of fire and smoke both sound like bad sci-fi. Angels and demons and falling stars, lakes of fire, beasts rising from a bloody ocean, Jainist cosmology, Mormon theology, spirit journeys, being smothered by ghosts in your dreams... all old and established religions. The veneer of credibility is a pure function of time. They all started toxic and singular, and only time and being forced to adapt to others changes them. So no, the beliefs are all batshit, but eventually the behavior of the group deviates from the ideal enough to concede to reality. The ones which don’t undergo that transformation don’t survive.
