They’ve learned that every time women speak up, there will be a dozen people with “theories” about why they’re lying, why it doesn’t matter, or why they’re not involved. Another dozen will opine about “inherent differences” in the sexes to explain differences in STEM employment, and another dozen will divert the conversation to some flavor of, “well that happens to guys too!” There’s a script that plays out, an exhausting and predictable script of denial, dismissive commentary, and deflection.
So what people learn is that they can get away with it, because usually they do. Not only can they get away with it, but dozens will leap to their defense. Watch how this thread unfolds, and compare them to previous ones. Look at the eagerness with which any suggestion that women are less suited for STEM than men is gobbled up and reposted to death. After a while people realize that STEM is full of people who use their brains to make disingenuous arguments to cover their ideological asses.
Edit: ...And now you’ve been flagged to death, meaning 10+ people flagged you in 10 minutes or less. I’m not even a little surprised.
- JulianMorrison 9y agoThis is truth and it got greyed out because people here don't like to face criticism.
- pluto9 9y agoAnother dozen will opine about “inherent differences” in the sexes to explain differences in STEM employment And yet another dozen will opine about how there are no such inherent differences, a far more evidence-free assertion.
- tomc1985 9y agoSo thats why my post shows up collapsed. Of course I got flagged. That's how the passive-aggressive asshole brigade fights back
- pluto9 9y agoYou're right, it would be more constructive for them to respond with name-calling and vitriol instead. But that sort of thing tends to get flagged here.
- robotresearcher 9y agoIntron, you were right. Two hours later the HN front page has replaced this sexism story with a story about discrimination against men in favour of women.
- IntronExon 9y agoI wish I hadn’t called it accurately, but yeah, the pattern once seen is hard to unsee. Taken individually it can be mistaken for sincerity gone awry, but in an ensemble over time, boom. The system here works really well for a lot of things; spam is often DOA for example! The mods though, can’t change the character of the people themselves. I try to tell myself that a lot of the predictable, negative outcomes amount to blowback in the face of real and inevitable change though. I hope I’m right about that too.
- robotresearcher 9y agoI learned something from you today, thanks. It's like putting on the glasses in They Live. I commented on the other thread to give you props. For what it's worth.
- Slansitartop 9y agoAnd those stories were flagged to death, too...
- IntronExon 9y agoThe third or fourth time they hit the front page? Oh look, it’s back again and already has 6 points. lol https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16506914 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16506914 Jesus Christ.
