I think the problem is simply in the name of the button. I ran this by some of my less technical friends who use Facebook and they said some variation of "yes, that's what it's for isn't it? It's just got a confusing name" Something like "Follow" would be more descriptive. EDIT: the problem stems from Facebook trying to switch from being a "person-to-person" social network to a Twitter-esque community network.
