If you weren't taught that Pythagoras was a vegetarian, it probably has more to do with someone not wanting to inadvertently preach vegetarianism via some vague appeal to authority. And hey, it's irrelevant anyway, so why should it be taught? If you over-teach this stuff you're just as liable to create cults of personality.
