They are. And one of those construsts is to not be compelled to pay people who do not represent you. Far left and right arguments against taxes aside, I think everyone agrees that you shouldnt have to tithe a church you do not attend.
- pmoriarty 9y agoWe have to pay for all sorts of things we might not use, like schools, roads, healthcare, police, the military, etc, through taxes. This is because (at least in principle) our society as a whole benefits from these things. Likewise, until now it's been thought that workers as a whole benefit from unions fighting for them.
