I’ve always lived in Texas. I’ve taken Amtrak from Austin to San Francisco, and also from Seattle to Chicago to Dallas. There are lots of car rental places in those small towns. A good example is another Amtrak stop, Alpine, Texas. You can rent plenty of types of cars, lots with 4x drive, before venturing on to Big Bend National Park.
