I think this will be a great leap forward for crowdsourced news, home-brewed entertainment and video blogging.
- trafficlight 16y agoI loath TV ads as well. I've had cable for the last few years with a DVR. For the longest time, fast forwarding through ads was really nice. Then, a few months ago, I picked up a Bluray player with Netflix streaming built-in. Netflix streaming is just awesome. No ads to worry about, no fast forwarding, I just watch my tv episode and I'm done. Eventually, I started to get pissed off at the mere thought of fast forwarding through commercials on the DVR. I just cancelled my cable last week because I hadn't actually turned in on in over a month.
- jsz0 16y agoI really dread the prospect of annoying low quality ads in the form of lower thirds or pop-up video style overlays that these platforms will enable. If the ads were relevant to my interests I might be more tolerant but I have one AdMob based app that constantly displays a horrible ad for what appears to be a welfare scam targeted at black women. I have no clue why they'd be serving me this ad. I can't even imagine how horrible it would be as a video ad with public access quality production and jacked up audio volume levels blaring at me unexpectedly. I hope Google ups their quality control and sets some sane limits or we might end up with something even worse than current TV advertising.
- tomjen3 16y agoAgreed and since cable was supposed to be ad free (that is why you paid for it right?) that is super annoying. I hope one day we can kill cable so that each show will be forced to compete on its own merit, without ads, and not just be at the mercy of some agency that misunderstand the value of its viewers (Star Trek TOS) or executives at fox that don't understand their own audience (see Firefly and another ton of scify show that have all been canceled in their first season). Heres is to the death of cable middle men.
