Hmm, maybe I'm missing something, but I lost interest after seeing that pretty much all the 'ad hoc' solutions listed (similar non-monad based solutions is the idea I think) were nearly identical to the monadic solutions, except some syntactic differences. As someone who doesn't care that much about little syntax nuances, the motivation to look further here escapes me.
