One weird trick for seeing articles like this is purchasing a subscription to The Wall Street Journal.
- frgtpsswrdlame 9y agoPaywalled articles shouldn't be on the front page of a public aggregator like this then. What's the point in an article most people can't read, just a catchy headline?
- eli 9y agoIt's a WSJ story that everyone here thought was important enough to vote up to the front page. Where else should the link go?
- frgtpsswrdlame 9y agoWell of course the link should go to the WSJ but I think in the case of paywalled articles it's good that mirrors get posted.
- eli 9y agoIs it not worth just paying what it costs for a subscription? Anyway, isn't that copyright infringement?

- EGreg 9y agoWhat is with this phrase "one weird trick"? I see it used constantly in all kinds of spammy marketing. Do the marketers really somehow realize that the word "weird" makes the speaker seem like an impartial reporter, or makes people more curious about the trick? Because it's freaking "weird"! I wouldn't think such a word would work like gangbusters but it keeps being used. And it's almost always spammy marketers. "One weird trick to do that thing you always wanted to do."
- zentiggr 9y agoIt'll be a keyword in titles until the clickthrough falls off and it'll disappear again. Enh.
- technofiend 9y agoOr just ignoring all WSJ articles and searching for the same topic elsewhere.
- dang 9y agoPlease don't take HN threads on generic tangents. They produce predictable discussions. https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html
- malchow 9y agoNoted, Deng, and sorry. But you must get sick of seeing the "predictable" cavalcade of ruses for getting past paywalls in the comments. And the cognitive dissonance of incessant anti-advertising threads sprinkled within HN's feed of interesting news articles, some of which will always be behind paywalls.
- dang 9y agoThe issue was decided a long time ago. Paywalls with workarounds are ok. It's fine to post workarounds, as panarky did. All the rest is off topic. The paywalls suck, of course. But HN without all those articles would suck much worse, so we live with the workarounds. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10178989 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10178989 https://news.ycombinator.com/newsfaq.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsfaq.html
