Whenever I see this kind of thing I always wonder if the elephant in the room is that STEM jobs (specifically tech/programming where there is greater demand than supply) are fucking terrible. Seriously, it's a lousy industry if you want to complete work and go home at the end of the day and feel good about what you did. The managerial ranks are amateur at best, and toxic and sociopathic at worst. There are multiples of people that will ride your coat tails in every conceivable direction of an organizational hierarchy, ready to make you feel bad if you don't enrich and empower them for their doing very little. If you have any attuning to sensing adversity and being taken advantage of, I imagine your instincts would be to run far away. I consider tech for the most part like being a stock broker in the 1980s. You can make some good money, but you are going to have to deal with a lot of bullshit to do so.
Compare that to virtually any other skilled job (with a 2+ yr degree), like medicine, logistics, accounting, law, civil service. Even the competitive world of sales has better culture and incentive structure.
