Came to post this, blindly raising the corporate tax rate will not work as intended and is an extremely naive suggestion to make
Corporations, like many other organisms, will do what is best for them at any given moment, including deciding whether or not behaving ethically is in their best interests
- IntronExon 9y agoThat sounds like a cancerous organism, in which case the solution is excision and destruction.
- cobookman 9y agoCorporations today might be the cold. But If you kill them off you might be left with something like Ebola. Just because something isn't perfect doesn't mean it's not the best outcome. If you've got a better idea let's hear it.
- IntronExon 9y agoKill the bad actors, not the whole system. That has been historically what is done, and it works. Edit: The Chickenshit Club is a good read which relates this in more detail.
- aje403 9y agoGreat thinking, the world is full of immoral people, should we burn that down too?
- IntronExon 9y agoNo, but we have these neat things called society, and government, regulations, and laws to minimize the damage they can do.
- aje403 9y agoWhich ideally should try to solve problems pragmatically, rather than resorting to "excision and destruction"
- IntronExon 9y agoIt depends, we do have prisons and life sentences. Edit:...And the death penalty, which I oppose, but has been a constant for thousands of years.
- yesenadam 9y agoYour assumption that the two are always mutually exclusive doesn't seem justified to me.
- kenning 9y agoThe US' last two presidents were complete dark horses who promised radical change to the way that the government works. They both ended up working pretty neatly within the system, unfortunately. The US could elect some Bernie Sanders or Jeremy Corbyn like figure who is actually tough on corporations. It could happen! Some measure similar to what the Fed did to Wells Fargo would be unthinkable to people used to this pessimistic political climate, but it's happening now. It wouldn't be hard to get elected on a message of raising corporate taxes and bend the rules however necessary to get them to actually pay.
