We've been hearing about CRISPR for a couple of years now. Any idea what's the approximate ETA to the market of this kind of technology, and are there any other obstacles except for the human trials? (Don't say "ethical questions" because it's a non-issue, there will be always multiple countries who'd ignore that.)
I hope it won't become another graphene, a discovery with enormous potential that would never leave the lab.
- ken 9y agoWhat constitutes "the market" to you? I know someone using CRISPR at work today. It sounds strange to want it to "leave the lab", since (IANABiologist but) it sounds like a lab-based technology. It'd be like asking when Postgres is going to leave the server. That's where it's used, no?

- rflrob 9y agoI think they’re asking when we can expect to see it used clinically. By analogy, vaccines are created in a lab, but they are used outside of one. Clinical CRISPR use would almost certainly require some lab work, but not really much basic science.
- jessriedel 9y agoCRISPR cancer therapies are in clinical trials in China, with American and Europeans trials starting in the next year. https://www.technologyreview.com/s/609722/crispr-in-2018-coming-to-a-human-near-you/ https://www.technologyreview.com/s/609722/crispr-in-2018-com... https://www.wired.com/story/crispr-therapeutics-plans-its-first-clinical-trial-for-genetic-disease/ https://www.wired.com/story/crispr-therapeutics-plans-its-fi... https://www.wsj.com/articles/china-unhampered-by-rules-races-ahead-in-gene-editing-trials-1516562360 https://www.wsj.com/articles/china-unhampered-by-rules-races...

- vadimberman 9y agoPerfect, thanks! So I guess it means about 2-3 years from now.
- indescions_2018 9y ago>>> graphene, a discovery with enormous potential that would never leave the lab Just noticed that LL Bean is selling PrimaLoft jackets with Aerogel tech. When mass demand for something like a flexible graphene based display meets economic viability. Then we can expect exponential adoption. But a priori prediction is shrouded in uncertainty.
- vadimberman 9y agoThat was the problem, it was not economically viable to mass-produce. I'm sure it will be solved, the question is when...
