Open standards, run your own if you want, nobody deprecating or discontinuing anything.
- SyneRyder 9y agoPersonally if I have to jump from Twitter, I'm more likely to switch to Micro.blog [1]. Everything is posted to your own site as an RSS post, and it already has iPhone and Mac apps. And of course, it has an API for making your own apps. [1] https://micro.blog/about https://micro.blog/about
- rocky1138 9y agoDoes it support OStatus?
- ttepasse 9y agoIt seems that Microblog is a mixture of Feeds and the Indieweb, namely the Micropub API which originated there: http://help.micro.blog/2017/api-posting/ http://help.micro.blog/2017/api-posting/ Btw: Isn't ActivityPub the new OStatus?
- SyneRyder 9y agoMight also be worth pointing out that Micropub is a W3C Recommendation [1], and I think MicroPub and ActivityPub are meant to work together [2]. - lokedhs 9y agoI tried Twitter a long time ago, and never enjoyed it. I've been quite active on Mastodon (@loke@functional.cafe) for the last several months, and enjoying it a lot. It's not perfect, but it gives me more satisfaction than Twitter ever could. The biggest problem with Mastodon at the moment is discoverability. It takes some effort finding the right people to follow but I've found a reasonable group of people who are interested in things like Emacs, Lisp etc.
- rocky1138 9y agoI'd love to read more on how you found those people. I completely agree that discoverability is a huge problem.
- skinnymuch 9y agoI am really interested in how you found people too.
- lokedhs 9y agoI joined an instance which focuses on the things I'm interested in, and look at the local timeline. That timeline contains original posts (i.e. not replies) posted from that instance. I'd follow pretty much anyone posting anything remotely interesting. A lot of people tend to boost interesting posts, and following people whose posts gets boosted allows you to grow your follow list with interesting posts. Unfollowing people that keeps posting uninteresting things is also important of course.
- skinnymuch 9y agoCan you mention your instance or how you went about finding it? Sorry for more questions
- beeflaw 9y agoI'm still looking for an "open" alternative that is strong on free speech without being home turf for white identitarians (gab.ai). Looking an Mastadon's policies makes me give up hope: https://mastodon.social/about/more https://mastodon.social/about/more
- rocky1138 9y agoYou can run your own and follow who you want. What's more free than that?
- draw_down 9y ago... is there a Mac app? Seems silly to leave Twitter over killing their Mac app if you go somewhere else that also doesn’t have one. (Let me guess, it’s open so anyone can write a Mac app if they want! Yeah, well there are third party Twitter apps too.)
