Slack, like all tools with built-in notifications, works out much better for me when I disable the notifications. I alt+tab to the window now and then to see if anyone's trying to get my attention and it tells me who, and how many unreads I have. The key is to not have the notification sound/popup and I can just bury Slack under my editor, browser etc until I decide I'm available.
