My issue with Slack in our organisation (a University), is that people spawn off new teams for everything, and nobody has a paid group, because it's too expensive with our budgets, so you lose the conversations by age at 20000 messages.
This has led to the situation where I'm in (a) My research group's group (b) One for people who program within the University (c) One for a side project I'm involved in (d) Slack channels for some software I use as dependency in my own project (e) One for a language specific group (f) One which is a group we share with collaborators at other Universities (g) About 5 more that have now been abandoned.
And because of that, I end up just turning off Slack all day and checking it in the evening, because I don't find it conducive to research work where I mostly work independently anyway.
