Can anyone please explain why Slack is so popular?
Isn't it just another IM chat? I've tried it a couple of times and found nothing special about it.
Also, in all companies I worked at they either had Lync or Skype (because Enterprise, Windows, Office suite etc.).
Even if company decides to try some fancy IM, isn't it better to switch to Atlassian HipChat as it gives nice integration with JIRA, Confluence, Bamboo, BitBucket (assuming company uses Atlassian toolchain)?
- geofft 9y agoIt's a high-quality product. My current employer uses Bitbucket for compliance reasons (I wrote the compliance tooling for my previous employer to use Slack) and while it works great, it's just worse in several small papercutty ways. Having a pleasant product causes people to be more likely to use it during the initial migration phase, which increases network effects, which is important for a successful communication system.
- edwong 9y agoIt's viral business model, phone/desktop apps, and integrations have made it a leader in workplace messaging. Hooks you with free and hits the sweet spot of UX.
- a_imho 9y agoSame experience. Coupled with the pricing imo it defies logic why Slack is popular but good for them I guess.
