We've found this to be partially true in our very small startup. The unstructured nature of Slack conversation do make it hard to go back and reference something that was said only a few days ago, however we have found that the search tool has been very useful in locating a decision or rule that was made a while back in casual conversation.
By and large, the biggest problem we have, even with a handful of users, is the fact that everyone tends to just use Slack as an ideas repository, and bug tracking/feature request tool, rather than log it in our actual Phabricator development tracking tool.
Also, we have (I believe) gone a little overboard with integrating our other tools into Slack (including Phabricator, AWS, Stripe etc.), so we are almost at a 1:1 ration of bot generated messages to user created messages at the moment - leading to a lot of inadvertent mental filtering of channels, resulting in missed (human) messages.
