For all the hate Slack gets, it works great for me. Yes, you can be interrupted, but you can also ignore it very easily. Without Slack, I’d have people coming up to my desk and asking me questions, which would _really_ be distracting. Maybe I work in a company with a good culture, but the middle managers don’t use Slack in the way he describes. Sure, managers can act that way, but they don’t have to. And in my experience, they don’t.
I don’t understand his comparisons to Trello and JIRA. Those are project management tools. Slack is a chat tool. Completely different things. And his complaint that it’s a bad tool for documentation also rings hollow. It’s a _chat_ app. Is he also going to complain that his hammer it a terrible tool for tightening screws?
- labster 9y agoYeah, maybe Slack is bad in OP's workplace. But in mine, it's been great for increasing communication in an all-remote developer company. JIRA is used for task management, docs are stored in the same repo as the code, and Slack is used just to talk to people or solicit opinions. No one ever uses @here because none of us want to be bothered either. I feel like most of the complaints on Slack are either because people use it as something other than logged IRC, or because it's getting misblamed for other company culture problems.
