Ask HN: Best game engine for indie game developer?

Hey everyone! I know nothing about gamedev, but I'm pretty experienced at programming and CG, and I'm thinking about learning some gamedev. Aside from Unity/Unreal (which seem like tools for big studios other than an indie hobbyist), what are some other game engines I should consider?
