There is some merit in having a localized indicator of approximately where in a given day cycle a particular location is, E.G. if I call someone on the other side of the planet knowing they're local time gives me some idea of how much I will or won't be annoying them. On the other hand, UTC is massively useful and the fact that we have almost no awareness of it in our daily lives is kind of problematic as well.
